UN: Dominican Gov social programs a model for region

Santo Domingo.- The UN Development Program(UNDP) on Wednesday called the Dominican government social programs a models ofinnovation and example for the region.

Jessica Faieta, UNDP director for LatinAmerica and the Caribbean, lauded the social policies being implemented in theDominican Republic, during the VIII MinisterialDevelopment Forum in Latin America and the Caribbean, held Monday and Tuesday.

"We are happy that it’s the DominicanRepublic (event venue) because of it’s emblematic commitments regarding thereduction of poverty and inequities in the country and has been very innovativein its policies," Faieta said.

She said during several years the UNDP hasbeen paying attention to social policies implemented in the country.

"Their CCTs are highly innovative, areimportant elements in the use of technology, how they are made focalizationsgroups are being discriminated against. What most caught my attention is how itis improving, how it has learned from these own challenges, sometimes mistakesare improved. And that has even helped ourselves to use it as a model and helpsus support other countries " Faieta said, interviewed by elcaribe.com.do.

Backing the statements was United NationsSystem resident coordinator Lorenzo Jimenez de Luis, who listed theinitiatives: president Danilo Medina’s surprise Sunday visits and extended schoolday, which he called "paradigms" for being "different,innovative and already being replicating in other countries."
