Tourist arrivals climb 4.9% in January: Central Bank

Santo Domingo.- The arrival of nonresidentforeigners to the country climbed 4.9% in January compared to same month in 2016, accordingto the Central Bank’s latest report on the tourism industry.

It said 545,627 non-resident visitors,both foreigners (89.0%) and Dominicans (11.0%) arrived by air, "demonstratingthe constant growth of the main contributing sector of the Dominican economy."

The report adds that South America was theonly region to post a decline in tourists’ arrivals, with 3,899 fewer visitors thanin January 2016 (-5.9%), as arrivals of tourists from Brazil fell.
