Santo Domingo.- Outspoken deputy José Laluz, called (R-Fla.) senator Marco Rubio “a creep” for trying to press Dominican Republic to vote against Venezuela in an Organization of American States (OAS) meeting set for 2pm Tuesday, to discuss Venezuela’s situation.
Rubio threatened Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Haiti of cuts in the aid they receive from the US if they “fail to defend democracy in their vote on Venezuela” in the OAS, where will discuss the of that country’s situation and will demand that Caracas release political prisoners, schedule elections and respect the Legislative Branch.
Laluz, National District lawmaker of Dominican Republic’s ruling party (PLD) spoke on the Sol de la Mañana radio program, where he called Rubio’s conservative positions “backward” and “old.”
He noted that the OAS approved the US military invasion of the Dominican Republic during the April 1965 Revolution.
During his state of the country speech last year president Danilo Medina demanded a public apology from the OAS for the invasion, and offered support for talks to deal with Venezuela’s political crisis. “We really want Venezuela to advance on the path of peace and institutionalism. In the same way that we want an OAS that promotes democratic institutions throughout the continent.”
