Salsa legend wins Dominican Republic’s top showbiz prize

Santo Domingo.-  Merengue and son legend, Cuco Valoy on Tuesday won Dominican Republic’s most coveted show business award, the Gran Soberano (grand sovereign), granted by the Journalists of the Arts Association (Acroarte), and sponsored by the Dominican National Brewery.

Valoy, whose more than 60 years in show business, also recorded salsa, bachata and bolero productions.

“I feel like a ballplayer when he goes to the Hall of Fame or something,” Valoy said, adding that the statuette makes him feel loved by all the people.

The composer of the salsa ‘Juliana’ recalled his beginnings in which with his music opened Europe’s doors to the Caribbean rhythms and especially Dominican Republic’ genres.

Brewery president Franklin León and Acroarte president Jorge Ramos headed the ceremony in the National Theatre.
