Santiago.- In a surprising statement in the nation’s second biggest city on Wednesday, president Danilo Medina said the country is no longer poor because the Dominican Republic isn’t receiving aid, since it “no longer qualifies.”
Among the topics Medina addressed was that of the housing deficit in relation to poverty, affirming that the Dominican Republic has advanced from a low-income to an upper middle-income country. “The Dominican Republic no longer qualifies for help, and is no longer given anything. We no longer qualify to be given nothing. ”
During ribbon-cutting for a school, Medina also referred to the possible start-up of the beleaguered Punta Catalina coal-fired power plant for next year. “Electric power, which has been the great problem of the Dominican Republic, which has limited development, perhaps, probably, the sure thing is that, next year will be a sad reminder of the past.”
