Santo Domingo.- Back-to-school also means more traffic jams in most of the city, home to a large part of the country’s 2.8 million students, whose presence is already being felt in major arteries.
The traffic chaos -somewhat relieved during summer vacation- starts early morning, when most students head to school and then again after 1pm., when parents or public transport pick them up throughout the metropolitan area.
According to outlet El Caribbe, among the avenues most prone to traffic jams in peak hours, figure the Kennedy, Lincoln, 27 de Febrero, Tiradentes and the Duarte highway.
The constant backups are behind the complaints even from motorists already accustomed to the congestion.
The motorist Elías Mota says it takes him more than 40 minutes to reach downtown from the Duarte highway, just 8.5 kilometers away.
