Accused in murder that stunned the country stays behind bars

, Emely Peguero

Santo Domingo.- The San Francisco de Macorís (center) Instruction Court on Tues. ruled three additional months of pretrial detention against Marlon Martinez, charged with murdering teenager Emily Peguero, who was four months pregnant.

Martínez reportedly suffers from dementia, but José Hoepelman, the Peguero family’s lawyer noted that an evaluation conducted this year certified that he’s “completely normal.”

“The connection of this person with the fact is incontestable, so he will remain in prison,” said Hoepelman of the murder that stunned the country. Martinez’s mother Marlin is also being held, charged with conspiracy for trying to dump the body.
