Santiago.- 150 employees of a Grupo Popular company on Tues. planted 6,862 seedlings of Caribea and Occidentalis pines in the woods at Plan Sierra, “reaffirming the financial organization’s commitment with sustainability and reduce its environmental footprint.”
In Popular’s second reforestation day by its staff this year, the planting was carried out on around 60 hectares in Los Montones, near San José de las Matas, Santiago province.
According to Plan Sierra figures, when the trees planted reach adult stage, they’ll absorb 2,196 tons of CO2 and store over 20.6 million liters of water annually.
To increase their chances of survival, the seedlings are planted with a protective gelatinous polymer that holds the soil moisture to guarantees over 80% survival.
“The implementation of this technology is possible because of the economic resources that the financial organization provides each year for research and development purposes. In addition, at the end of each day, technicians carry out follow-up work,” Plan Sierra said in a press release.
