Dominican Republic is an air hub for travelers from Latin America

The Dominican Republic is being used as an air hub and hub for airlines for travelers from South America and other regions who use Arajet at Santo Domingo (SDQ) and Punta Cana (PUJ) airports.

This was stated by Elizabeth Giraldo, Arjajet’s regional sales manager for South America, who explained that they operate in six countries in this subregion: Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile. However, the airline is in 17 countries with 25 routes and destinations in North, Central, the Caribbean, and South America.

“The Dominican Republic has great potential and has already become a strategic hub to connect North and South America, given its positioning in the Caribbean and its proximity to other countries, which makes it viable to establish connections in a maximum time of nine to ten hours,” she said when participating as an exhibitor at the Anato tourism fair in Bogotá.

Regarding demand, Argentina and Colombia are the South American countries with the highest flow of passengers to the Dominican Republic. In addition, due to its cold climate, Canada is the primary source of tourists to this destination with Arajet.

Giraldo recalled that in 2024, they moved more than 1.2 million passengers, and it is projected that with entry into the U.S. market, that figure will increase to 1.7 million in 2025.

He said that despite being a young airline that began operations in September 2022, it has been very well received by people.

Currently, the airline expects to take delivery of three new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, increasing its fleet to 13 state-of-the-art aircraft with the highest efficiency in the market.

Regarding the expansion of routes, Giraldo announced the recent opening of flights to Miami and San Juan de Puerto Rico, thanks to the approval of open skies with the United States. He also mentioned that they continue to reinforce frequencies in the destinations where they already operate.

DR needs to start modernizing some of its airports, starting with the one in Santo Domingo. For a country that receives millions of passengers and tourists, we should have world-class airports.

I concur. They should invest just as much as NY invested in LaGuardia Airport.
