Fishermen in Sabaneta launch tilapia production project
Santo Domingo.- The Sabaneta Fishermen’s Cooperative (Coopescasa), with the support of GoldQuest Dominicana through its Romero Project, has launched an ambitious aquaculture production project at the Sabaneta dam, focused on the sustainable farming of tilapia.
The initiative began with an initial investment of more than three million pesos, and when it reaches full production capacity, the projection is that it will reach six million.
The project’s objective is to organize the various associations and independent fishermen into a cooperative structure dedicated to the controlled farming of tilapia. In addition to strengthening the local economy and generating new jobs, this transformation seeks to turn fishermen into trained aquaculture entrepreneurs, improving their productivity, market access, and business sustainability.
A positive effect on consumer prices is also expected, facilitating access to fresh, quality food and directly contributing to regional food security.
The initial planting of the project included the progressive release of 18,500 fingerlings in different phases as part of a technical training plan for the personnel involved. During Holy Week, a commercial trial produced 523 pounds of tilapia, sold at RD$120 per pound to community residents. The event was attended by members of the cooperative’s Board of Directors and Supervisory Board, as well as community leaders, validating the technical and commercial viability of the initiative.
This project is part of GoldQuest Dominicana’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, led by engineer José Ogando, Environment and Social Management Manager. This program promotes sustainable, productive projects that foster economic development, strengthen food security, and encourage environmental conservation in rural communities in the province of San Juan.
Keep in mind that this is a garbage fish in most of the world. How about some quality seafood.
