Notorious union boss endorses Dominican Republic’s opposition candidate

Santo Domingo. – The notorious head of the bus owners association (Fenatrano) on Sunday endorsed opposition PRD party presidential candidate Hipólito Mejía for the May 20 elections, in that they are committed to work to remove the “corrupt thieves from the National Palace.”

Juan Hubieres, known as one of Dominican Republic’s “owners” for his often violent strikes with impunity, said ruling party senator Felix Bautista, the directors of the Bus Services Office, Ignacio Ditrén, of the Transport Reform Office, Diandino Peña, former Tourism minister Felix Jimenez “and president Leonel Fernandez himself are corrupt and thieves, who’ve used their posts for their own benefit.”

For his part, Mejía said “Dominican Justice isn’t anyone’s monopoly” and that he would confront corruption.

Hubieres’ endorsement comes the same day Mejía obtained the support of Altagracia province senator Amable Aristy, ex Agrarian Reform director Hector Rodriguez Pimentel, and ex ambassador to Colombia Angel Lockward also announced their backing. All three veteran politicos have a long trail of questioned use of taxpayers’ money.
