Opposition presidential candidate got Mexican drug money, Senator says

Santo Domingo.- A Dominican Republic senator on Wednesday challenged the opposition PRD party’s presidential candidate to state why he visited Sinaloa, Mexico on February, reportedly flown there by the pilot and confidant of that region’s drug cartel leader Joaquin (El Chapo) Guzmán.

Peravia province senator Wilton Guerrero said Hipólito Mejía should reveal which industrialists or people he met with, assuring being informed that “the trip wasn’t to a farming fair as the candidate’s field team had said, and instead to obtain funds from narcotics traffickers to finance his campaign.”

“That was a trip veiled in mystery which Hipólito has never wanted to refer to. This is a very serious event which has powerfully drawn the attention of American and Mexican authorities” the senator told the press in his office in Congress, adding that the details surfaced during an interrogation conducted by U.S. agents of Guzman’s pilot.
