Top officials clash over deputy’s statutory rape conviction

Santo Domingo.- Unconstitutional, illegal and disrespectful to the solemnity of the body were the words Chamber of Deputies president Abel Martinez used to describe National District prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso’s attempt to detain the lawmaker Ramon Antonio Fernandez.

Assistant DA Julio Saba went with agents to the Lower Chamber to arrest Fernandez yesterday on a court ordered warrant,after which Martinez stated that "everyone must refrain from any action contrary to constitutional provisions."

"The Chamber of Deputies shall take the measures to enforce the mandate of Dominican justice. We’ll not incur in conduct contrary to the law and the Constitution by one of our legislators."

Martinez added that the Disciplinary Committee will be given a report Wednesday on the deputy convicted of statutory rape by the Supreme Court.
