Fewer femicides, violent deaths last year; Police report
Santo Domingo.- Police spokesman Maximo Baez on Thursday revealed that there were 198 femicides last year, a decrease of 15% compared with the 233 women killed in 2011.
The National Police report also lists 2,251 violent deaths last year, 266 fewer than the previous year’s 2,517.
He aid there were 1,405 deaths attributed to social conflicts in 2012, a reduction of 299 compared with the 1,704 in 2011.
According to the report, there were around 230 deaths from confrontations between police and suspects of crimes last year, compared with 283 the previous year.
The Police spokesman said there were fewer police agents killed in 2012 with 43 cases, compared with the around 70 in 2011.
Baez also reported fewer violent deaths among members of the Armed Forces last year with 23, compared with 47 in 2011.
