Dominican Republic’s outspoken Cardinal among Papacy hopefuls

Santo Domingo.- For the second time in his career, Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez, known for his razor sharp rebukes of even senior political leaders, is among the prelates who could succeed the resigning Pope Benedict the 16th.

Though considered among the Catholic Church’s most conservative voices, Lopez is also know for his defense of unpopular causes, such as his staunch stance against abortion.

Also mentioned as possible replacements of Pope Joseph Ratzinger, who announced he will leave the papacy Feb. 28, are the cardinals from Argentina, Colombia, Belgium India, Brazil, Honduras and Brazil, Austria among others.

Lopez Rodriguez was also eligible to replace John Paul II, who was replaced by Ratzinger.
