Opposition party row roils Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- Interior and Police minister Jose Ramon Fadul reiterated Wednesday that the authorities guarantee public order where the meeting of senior leaders of Dominican Republic’s main opposition party, PRD, but noted that it would outside the place selected for the gathering.

The latest round of the PRD’s internal confrontations has roiled the country, whose social, religious and business leaders no longer make suggestions for a compromise within Dominican Republic’s oldest political organization.

Fadul also reiterated that the military and police assigned to the ex-generals who in turn are escorts of PRD president Miguel Vargas and former president Hipolito Mejia, who he said number around 600, will be quartered that day.

"We guarantee peace, tranquility and good governance," the official said, after revealing the high number of retired generals and colonels who form part of the security detains of the heads of the two PRD factions

He said more than 400 active police and military would be ordered to quarters that day, “because we can not allow fighting among agents over the affairs of a political party."
