Dominicans mark 53 years since rising from the ashes

Santo Domingo.- Today Friday May 30, marks 53 years since the execution of Dominican Republic’s bloodiest dictator, Rafael Leonidas Trujillo.

The date also marked the end of a 31-year tyranny which dealt all manner of humiliation, as well as the looting of the country’s wealth .

Witnesses and historians agree that the assassination was an event that resulted from a vast conspiracy formed by operatives, politicians and the military.

They planned and carried out the execution, but failed in the attempt to arrest Trujillo’s family and key lackeys, to then remove the tyranny’s political and military leadership.
