New York senator Peralta slams Rangel’s ‘divisive’ campaign

New York, NY.- New York State senator Jose Peralta on Monday questioned congressman Charles Rangel’s campaign’s for criticizing Adriano Espaillat, who’s opposed to needless deportations.

“It’s unconscionable that the representative from one of most diverse districts in the country apparently supports the heart-breaking deportation of more than 2 million people,” the lawmaker said in an emailed statement.

“How can you claim to be a champion for immigration reform when you are unwilling to stand up to this injustice? I would expect this position from a Tea Party Republican, not from a lifelong Democrat in the middle of a primary,” Peralta said.

He said the criticism from Rangel’s campaign “comes on the heels of a week of divisive rhetoric,(and) is an even more profound insult to New York’s immigrant community.”

Peralta demands Rangel’s “immediately apology.”
