Senate president’s pledge to step down unprecedented

Santo Domingo.- If Senate president Reinaldo Pared makes good on his promise and leaves office on Aug. 16, he’ll be the only such lawmaker to desist voluntarily and the second longest in the post during the last 50 years, surpassed only by r Adriano Uribe (Nano), from San Cristobal.

Pared was elected as head of the Senate on August , 2006, 16, when Dominican Republic’s PLD ruling party took control of both house of Congress after the congressional and municipal elections of May that year.

The lawmaker, who announced his decision Thursday to concentrate on his presidential bid for the PLD, is also the organization’s General Secretary.
