US envoy tours 9-1-1 emergency system, announces expansion

Santo Domingo – U.S. ambassador James W. Brewster on Tuesday visited the national emergency and security system 9-1-1, two months after opened and toured the facility with Presidency deputy minister, Zoraima Cuello and Center director Dalvert Polanco.

The diplomat discussed several issues with the officials, among them the emergency system’s progress, the Center’s emergency response function, the challenge posed by a population with little experience on its correct use and its expansion nationwide.

In an emailed statement, the U.S. Embassy said US Government officials will visit the country August 12 and 13 to meet with Dominican counterparts and discuss support for the system’s second phase, to be expanded to Santiago and the north region.

“The United States Government has provided more than US$7.0 million to support the 9-1-1 emergency system platform thus far,” the U.S. Embassy said.
