IDB, FIA to help Dominican Republic halt road carnage

Santo Domingo.- Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) president Luis Alberto Moreno will head on Friday the forum "Paving the way to road safety," together with the Dominican Government and the International Automotive Federation (FIA).

Moreno arrived yesterday to join FIA president Jean Todd, who’s been heading since Tuesday the previous work by the region’s auto clubs, which also deals with road safety issues.

The Forum forms part of FIA’s 4th Region Congress, aimed at dealing with the challenges, opportunities and the scope of the actions to achieve the goal: Decade of action for the road safety.

The road traffic reduction initiative promoted by the UN seeks to reduce the world’s road accident fatalities by 50% by 2020.

Traffic accidents are the region’s leading cause of death among people 15-to-29 year-olds and the second leading cause of death in children 5 to 14.
