Dominican town demands land to bury departed

Santo Domingo.- All activities in the town of Baitoa, Santiago province were halted from 6am Thursday, as residents demand the construction of a new cemetery, but the Councilmembers decided to build the new City Hall on the land designated.

Since early morning townsfolk blocked the streets with trash, tree trunks and other objects, to support the construction of the cemetery.

Residents of the highland town began the protest Wednesday with a walk through the town, clashing with police sent to maintain order.

The previous City Council bought the land to build the new site, but current mayo Radhames Rojas decided to build the municipal offices, despite opposition from residents.

Baitoa’s cemetery dates to the early 1900s, and has no more space for new burials.
