Prosecution appeals acquittals of officials ‘embezzled’ US$100M+

Santo Domingo.- Anticorruption prosecutor’s office (Pepca) director Laura Guerrero on Monday announced appeals filed on the acquittals of senator Felix Bautista and San Francisco DM mayor Felix Rodriguez, both charged separately of embezzling more than US$100.0 million.
The official said the appeal in Bautista’s case consists of over 600 pages, in which the prosecution filed 16 new pieces of evidence against the lawmaker from San Juan Province (west).
Guerrero also rejected that the case against Bautista is double jeopardy.
The rulings favoring Rodriguez and Bautista have sparked rebuke across the country, since many see it as a severe setback in the war on government corruption.
