Probe ordered on reports of scamming of Haitians who seek papers

Santo Domingo.- Interior and Police minister Jose Ramon Fadul on Monday ordered an investigation into allegations that the coordinators are scamming money out of the foreigners who visit government offices to legalize their status.

He said signs have been posted at the entrances warning those employees that if caught will be arrested and immediately terminated regardless of their job description.

He said last weeks’ complaints during the registration process came as a surprise to him.

Fadul also reiterated the warning that the deadline for foreigners to legalize their status expires June 17. “There will be no extension,” not just for Haitians but to any other alien.

Complaints

Haitians continue to complain of difficulties to get documents at the offices of Plan to Regularize Foreigners as a prerequisite to obtain a Dominican residence.

Meanwhile in the Plan’s main center located in the Government Office Building (Huacal) work was normal on Monday though the number of applicants trickled to less than half.
