Sugarcane workers file for an injunction to avert deportation

Santo Domingo.- A group of more than 1,500 sugarcane workers on Thursday filed for an injunction at the Superior Administrative Court, to avert their deportation and of the families to Haiti, after the deadline to register for the government’s legalization program concluded Wednesday.

The injunction sought against the ministries of Interior and Police, the Presidency, Foreign Affairs, and the Central Electoral Board and Immigration Agency was requested by the workers comes as deportations to the neighboring country loom, and also aims to obtain recognition of their acquired rights as government contractors.

The Court’s 1st Civil Chamber scheduled a hearing for July 25, and till then will issue subpoenas to the defendant institutions.
