US Envoy: Foreign press unfair to Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- US ambassador James W. Brewster on Sunday said the international media have published reports that have been unfair to the country, regarding the government’s program to legalize undocumented aliens. He called on the government to continue the work respecting migrants’ rights.

Brewster, attending a concert at the Colonial Zone as part of the LGBT pride activities, lauded the Dominican and Haitian governments’ work to regularize the immigration status of thousands of people living in Dominican Republic, and hailed president Danilo Medina’s efforts to guarantee the human rights of migrants through the program.

"I know there are reports that have not been fair, but we have to continue working with those who tell the truth. You cannot give up when you are trying to do the right thing no matter what people say," said the US envoy, quoted by Acento.com.do.

Regarding allegations of mass deportations by the Dominican government, Brewster said he’s unaware that repatriations have taken place.
