Only in Dom. Rep.: Senate aims to find 2,300 ‘ghost’ cops

Santo Domingo.- The Senate Interior and Police Commission willinvestigate whereabouts of the around 2,300 “ghost” police officers who get apaycheck despite never showing up at National Police headquarters to carry out theirduties in public safety.
The commission created an “analysis unit” to determinewhere they are and who they serve.
Commission chair Julio Cesar Valentin said they’ll demandsanctions for those authorities that allow police officers to serve as servantsto individuals, business leaders and celebrities, an action he called “barbarism.”
He said an "iron fist" must be applied againstthose privileges and punish those who violate the law.
The Senate’s decision comes after National Police chief NelsonPeguero revealed last month that around 2,000 officers are assigned to generalsand officials.
