Government’s silence on canceled US visas roils Dominican society, again

Santo Domingo.- The Government’s silence on issues thatroil the population and on which wide sectors for society demand a response is manifestonce again, on the manner in which the US Embassy canceled the visas of CentralElectoral Board (JCE) president Roberto Rosario.

Pundits were abuzz on the media Wednesday, demanding atleast that the Government reveal the reason given by US diplomats for the unpresentedmeasure.

Despite the uproar over the cancellation of Rosario’s US visas,neither the Presidency’s Press Office, very diligent in other occasions, northe Foreign Ministry have referred to the issue which Rosario had described as “thorny.”

Prior to notifying Rosario that his visas were to be cancelled,US ambassador James W. Brewster visited president Danilo Medina late Thursday toreport on the reasons for the State Department’s decision to cancel both the touristand official visa of the president of the JCE.

Although the norm in these cases is to informed on what wasdiscussed, at least one analyst quoted by elnacional.com.do said he hadconfirmed repots that the president had "accepted and understood" thereasons given by the US diplomat.
