Santo Domingo – Meteorologist Jean Suriel, one of the country’s most authoritative voices, explained that no city can quickly drain more than 200 millimeters of rainfall.

Suriel cited the impact that such intense rains in a short time have had on other major cities in the world, citing the recent floods in Brazil, Texas, and Germany as an example.

“We also have France, Switzerland, Italy. It has happened in Spain, in recent days in India, Pakistan, China, well, in short, much of the planet is receiving the same oceanic and atmospheric behavior,” he added. “Extreme floods are not unique to the Dominican Republic and every time it rains hard we are seeing it, as in recent years there are more floods than 20 or 30 years ago and there is a very important factor and is the increase in humidity in the atmosphere and temperatures,” he said.

The expert was emphatic in sustaining that the rains that fell in the National District last Thursday, which exceeded 200 millimeters and caused some floods, are an example of this.

He explained that rains affect the planet due to the humidity in the atmosphere and the temperatures. Precipitations develop between one and three hours, which previously took between eight and 24 hours.

The reasoning of the renowned forecaster clarifies that what happened on Saturday, November 18, 2023, and November 4, 2022, whose accumulated rainfall was 431 and 266 millimeters, respectively, falls within the above described since no city can drain these large volumes of water lost in such a short period.
