Dominican Republic: fishermen rescue survivors of capsized boat

San Pedro de Macorís, DR.- A harrowing rescue operation unfolded off the coast of Guayacanes as fishermen battled to save dozens of people from a capsized boat. The vessel, carrying over 90 individuals attempting the perilous journey to Puerto Rico, overturned in the treacherous waters. Five lives were tragically lost in the incident.

David Espinal, a local fisherman, vividly described the chaotic scene as resembling the Titanic. “The horror of what I witnessed is haunting,” he said. “People were struggling to stay afloat, and many were already submerged.”

According to Listín Diario, the fishermen, initially focused on their own livelihoods, found themselves thrust into a life-or-death situation. Upon discovering the overturned boat, they abandoned their fishing equipment to prioritize the rescue. “It was a heart-wrenching decision,” said Kenny Méndez Frías, another rescuer. “But those people were crying out for help.”

The survivors, primarily Dominicans, displayed unimaginable desperation, clinging to anything that would keep them above water. Some had sustained severe burns from clinging to fuel tanks. Despite the perilous conditions, the fishermen worked tirelessly to bring as many people to safety as possible.

“We didn’t see color or age,” Espinal stated. “Our only goal was to save lives.” Among the rescued were elderly individuals, women, and even a pregnant woman who tragically lost her life.

The survivors were transported to the Antonio Musa Hospital in San Pedro de Macorís for medical attention. While the community is reeling from the tragedy, the fishermen’s bravery and selfless actions have been widely praised, Listín Diario reported.
