On Monday, 14 lanes will begin operating at kilometer 9 of the Duarte highway
Expansion of Duarte highway from 8 to 14 lanes.
Santo Domingo—The Minister of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), Deligne Ascención, announced that 14 lanes of kilometer 9 of the Duarte highway will begin to operate this Monday, Sept. 16.
The expansion is to solve the long blockages that are generated on this road.
“Early Monday we are already opening for the use of the 14 lanes, that is, the eight lanes that have been enabled, which total 14, while we will continue with the other works that are already landscaping and there are still some works to be done,” he said.
The entity has been carrying out this construction since February 2022, contemplating tree planting, lighting, and urban restoration.
The work, which has an investment of more than RD$1,200 million pesos, will have the capacity to mobilize more than 150 thousand vehicles daily without blockages, as announced.
This is good. However, it is a band-aid fix to the traffic chaos of Greater Santo Domingo. It may diminish long blockages on this section of the highway, to and from the toll gates. However, it does not significantly reduce the blockages on its other sections and roads that feed and make exit of the highway.
The country needs the balls to take on the traffic chaos, 1st by reducing the large amounts of vehicles that should not be on the roads.
