InterEnergy installs largest wind turbines in Central America and Caribbean
Santo Domingo.- Grupo Eólico Dominicano (GEDOM), a part of InterEnergy Group, in collaboration with Fondo Cerrado de Desarrollo de Sociedades Popular, managed by AFI Popular, has launched three new wind turbines at the Matafongo wind farm in Sabana Buey, Peravia. These Siemens SG 5.0-145 units, each with a capacity of 5.2 MW and standing over 127 meters tall, are the largest in the Caribbean and Central America. The addition boosts the wind farm’s capacity from 34 MW to 50 MW, enabling it to supply clean energy to more than 50,000 Dominican homes and reduce the need for importing approximately 258,000 barrels of oil.
This expansion strengthens Matafongo’s position as a key player in the Dominican Republic’s renewable energy sector. It also marks the first hybrid project in the country, with plans to add 50 MW of solar generation next year. The Matafongo wind farm, inaugurated in 2019, continues to serve as a flagship project for wind energy in the Dominican Republic.
