Dominican authorities work to secure release of citizen detained in Haiti

Haiti.- The Director General of Migration, Vice Admiral Luis Rafael Lee Ballester, announced ongoing efforts with Haitian authorities to secure the release of Manuel Adolfo Calderón García, a Dominican detained in Jacmel, Haiti, for an expired visa. The Vice Admiral confirmed that steps are being taken in coordination with various organizations, though he did not specify which entities are involved.

Lee Ballester assured that the case is under evaluation, with the aim of resolving the matter promptly. He also highlighted the strict surveillance measures in place at the borders to ensure security and mentioned plans for constructing a bilateral market to enhance trade relations in the region.

Negotiations with Haitian authorities are expected to progress in the coming days as efforts continue to address Calderón García’s situation and reinforce cooperation between the two nations.

I don’t know what to make of this. First, several countries have travel advisories against visiting Haiti due to the current security risk. Second, land border crossing from DR to Haiti is basically limited to trade and humanitarian purposes. Why ventured into Haiti with an expired passport? Why doesn’t the Haitian Government simply deport him back to DR?
