Senate extends Labor Code Reform talks to January 2025
Santo Domingo.- The special Senate commission studying the proposed Labor Code reform has extended its dialogue with various sectors until January 2025, announced Senator Rafael Duluc, commission president. This extension aims to accommodate feedback from groups that have yet to share their perspectives, delaying the presentation of the commission’s report until after December 31, 2024.
The decision follows the business sector’s recent proposal to cap severance pay at six years of seniority or 10 minimum wages. While supported by entities like the National Council of Private Companies (Conep), the proposal has faced resistance, including criticism from Deputy Carlos de Pérez and protests from union members, who have threatened nationwide strikes if workers’ rights are compromised.
The commission will consult labor experts, including legal figures like Milton Ray Guevara and Rafael Alburquerque, in upcoming sessions to ensure a fair and comprehensive reform process.
