MIREX highlights national progress in human rights protection

Santo Domingo.- On International Human Rights Day, December 10, the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX) celebrated national progress in promoting and respecting human rights, a central focus of Dominican foreign policy. This year’s commemoration marks the country’s first year as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, where it has actively supported gender equality, environmental protection, and the rights of vulnerable populations.

MIREX emphasized its commitment to the “pro homine” principle, prioritizing human rights protections in all decisions. Domestically, the ministry has implemented initiatives like the Institutional Performance Evaluation (IPE) and SISMAP monitoring system, training 45 public institutions on equity, justice, and dignity. Achievements include second place in the 2023 EDI Ranking, reflecting institutional modernization and diplomatic professionalism.

This year’s event coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Interinstitutional Commission for Human Rights. Key accomplishments celebrated included the National Plan on Human Rights, contributions to universal and inter-American human rights systems, treaty compliance, and participation in the Universal Periodic Review. MIREX reaffirmed its commitment to building an inclusive, democratic society rooted in human dignity and the protection of fundamental rights.
