Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader announced that the Dominican Republic will begin issuing electronic passports in August 2025, marking a significant milestone in modernizing the nation’s travel documents.

Lorenzo Ramírez, Director General of Passports, outlined the rigorous transparency and security measures undertaken to meet international standards. The new passports will feature polycarbonate data sheets and biometric laser technology, ensuring robust security and data integrity.

To prevent future shortages, the government secured a tender for 5 million passport books, with financial solvency and timely delivery as key requirements. A consortium of three companies won the contract in December, ensuring the initiative’s timely rollout. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) supported the process, emphasizing the project’s adherence to global standards.
