CESAC warns of rising laser attacks on aircraft in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- The Specialized Corps for Airport and Civil Aviation Security (CESAC) has reported at least twelve incidents in recent months where laser beams were aimed at commercial and private aircraft, posing a significant risk to aviation safety. According to CESAC director Enmanuel Souffront Tamayo, 60% of these cases were reported at Cibao International Airport in Santiago, while 40% occurred at Las Américas International Airport, primarily during nighttime flights.

Souffront Tamayo emphasized that these incidents compromise the safety of passengers and pilots, particularly during critical landing maneuvers. The bright laser beams interfere with pilots’ vision by affecting their depth perception and ability to safely control the aircraft. He warned that those responsible for such reckless actions may not fully understand the potential consequences and called for legal repercussions, advocating for penalties ranging from two to five years in prison.

Authorities are actively investigating these incidents, working in coordination with security agencies and aviation officials to identify those involved. CESAC has reiterated the urgent need for stricter enforcement to prevent further occurrences and ensure the safety of both commercial and private flights in the Dominican Republic.
