Boca Chica.- The Eastern Tourist Corridor, which includes the Coral Highway and the Eastern Highway, is known for its optimal geometric design but has at least eight critical points where accidents frequently occur, according to a 2023 study by the Ministry of Public Works.
The 196.8-kilometer highway runs from Boca Chica to La Romana and connects with the Coral Highway from La Romana to Punta Cana, serving as a key route for tourists. However, safety concerns have arisen due to issues such as blocked drainage channels, illegal crossings, poor road integration, and lack of safety barriers. Notably, the “Curve of Death” and the Punta Cana roundabout have been highlighted as major accident-prone areas.
Since 2024, 95 people have died in accidents on both highways. Road expert Juan José Castilla attributes the risks to inadequate road design, poor maintenance, and failure to respect right-of-way regulations. Authorities and private stakeholders, such as the Puntacana Group, have taken measures to improve safety, but experts emphasize the need for further structural adjustments.
The roads no doubt can be risky. However, the biggest risk are the thousands of foolhardy drivers who ignore road hazards.
