Dominican Republic hosts first Mass Transportation Forum to promote mobility

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic will host its first Mass Transportation Forum this Tuesday and Wednesday, June 17–18, at the Pontifical Catholic University Mother and Teacher (PUCMM) in Santo Domingo. The free event will bring together national and international experts, along with representatives from both the public and private sectors.

Organized in collaboration with OPRET and INTRANT, two key transportation authorities in the country, the forum aims to promote sustainable, integrated public transportation and position the Dominican Republic as a logistics hub. The initiative seeks to improve transportation stability and raise awareness of ongoing developments in the sector.

Jesús Ramírez Fernández, director of PUCMM’s School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, emphasized that mass transportation involves more than just the Metro—it also includes the cable car and the OMSA bus network. He noted that this forum marks the beginning of future discussions on comprehensive transportation solutions.

Leonel Carrasco, OPRET’s Environmental Director, pointed out that the Santo Domingo Metro serves around 400,000 passengers daily, highlighting both the system’s critical role and its operational challenges. Meanwhile, OPRET Executive Director Rafael Santos Pérez reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to public education, workforce training, and advancing the country’s mass transit infrastructure.
