Government opens tender for construction of Santo Domingo Monorail
Santo Domingo.- The Government of the Dominican Republic has launched a public bidding process for Phase I of the Santo Domingo Monorail, which includes detailed engineering and construction of infrastructure and related systems. The tender, published by the Trust for the Development of the Mass Transportation System (FITRAM), requires interested parties to download the Specific Conditions Document from www.fitram.gob.do. Bids must be submitted in physical form at the FITRAM General Project Coordination Office in Santo Domingo on Thursday, October 23, 2025, during the designated technical and economic bid reception times.
The Santo Domingo Monorail will integrate into the Santo Domingo Integrated Transportation System (SIT-SD), connecting with Metro Lines 1 and 2 and enhancing intermodal transit options. Phase I covers a 10.5-kilometer route with 12 stations, running from Charles de Gaulle Avenue at the Rey Juan Carlos Bridge in Santo Domingo Este to the Olympic Center in the National District. The project aims to serve over 1 million residents, accommodating an initial 12,500 passengers per hour per direction and approximately 306,000 passengers per day.
The system will initially operate with 4-car trains carrying 562 passengers per train, providing 22,480 passengers per hour per direction with 90-second intervals. It is designed for future expansion to 6-car trains, increasing capacity to 34,160 passengers per hour per direction, to meet growing demand. Subsequent phases will extend the monorail to Pintura, connecting with Cable Car Line 3, and to the Duarte Highway, linking with Metro Line 2C in Los Alcarrizos. FITRAM will oversee construction and ensure the project meets the city’s long-term mobility needs.
