Colombian President declines to attend Summit of the Americas in the Dominican Republic
Colombia.- Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced this Wednesday that he will not attend the upcoming Summit of the Americas, scheduled for December in the Dominican Republic. The decision stems from the exclusion of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela from the event, as well as the presence of U.S. forces in Caribbean waters. In a post on his X account, Petro stated, “I will not attend the Summit of the Americas in the Dominican Republic. Dialogue does not begin with exclusions.” The Colombian leader also revealed that he had proposed a CELAC–U.S. meeting aimed at discussing the economic integration of the American continent but said Washington had not responded to the initiative or other related proposals made to Latin American and Caribbean nations.
