Two boats will clean Santo Domingo’s coast daily

Santo Domingo.- Two ships, one a trash collector and another a shredder entered the Ozama river mouth on Wed. to collect the garbage and lilacs that pollute its water and Greater Santo Domingo’s coast.

The boats, which can remove aquatic plants, plastics and other waste, were bought for RD$10.0 million by Tropigás Foundation

They will ply a 20-kilometer route upriver daily, crewed by the Dominican Navy and Foundation collaborators.

Tropigás Foundation president Carlos José Martí said the trash gathered will be deposit at strategic points and then removed by City crews.

He said the cleanup aims to make the Isabela and Ozama rivers more touristy, where sports and other activities can be carried out.

He said they donated trash cans to each house in a sprawling barrio to accustom residents to put the garbage in them and not hurl it in the river.

The cleanup will take place from 8am to 5pm, according to personnel from the Tropigas Foundation.
