Abinader forms commission to explore MLB-standard baseball stadium

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader has issued Decree 306-25 establishing a special advisory commission to assess the feasibility of constructing a modern baseball stadium on state-owned land in the Ensanche La Fe neighborhood of Santo Domingo. The envisioned facility would meet Major League Baseball (MLB) standards, aiming to position the Dominican capital as a venue for international baseball events.
Beyond the stadium, the commission will examine complementary projects that support urban renewal, sports development, and recreational spaces—strategically maximizing public land use for the city’s benefit. The decree underscores the importance of modern sports infrastructure aligned with the country’s rich baseball legacy and growing global influence in the sport.
Chaired by Jorge Subero Isa, the commission includes the Minister of Sports, BANDEX’s general manager, the National Baseball Commissioner’s executive director, and experts Angélica Noboa Pagán, Elka Shecker Mendoza, Olivo Rodríguez Huertas, and Edgar Torres Reynoso, who will serve as executive director. The group will report directly to the President and operate under the Ministry of Finance until their mandate is fulfilled.
Hope this comes to fruition. It’s about damn time.
This would normally be a worth while investment. However, until the government can streamline its efficiency, we should not even consider this. The simple fact that a “commission” was created for it highlights the need to reduce the number of “ministry of;” hands in the proverbial cookie jar.
If MLB was to partner with the country in the design and development of a stadium it may be worthwhile. Adding MLB game venues to the proposed stadium would be a draw for the Dominican public and sport tourism. A concern is government almost always seems to create a foul soncocho when the lure of $$$ to fill members private closets burns into searching eyes.
It goes back a few years, 2013, of a rumor of the NY Yankees privately funding a stadium in Benerito, La Romana. It never panned out. This all being rumor. it is not confirmed. Some suggest it did not come to attainment because the numbers did not look inviting to the Yankees and/or gov’t. It asks the question why would the RD want to construct a stadium with public money if the Yankees are reluctant to construct their own?
