Big business, mayor eye a Santo Domingo Convention Center

Santo Domingo.- Big business on Tuesday proposed thecreation of a bureau of convention centers to Santo Domingo mayor David Collado,to promote the city of Santo Domingo as a business tourism destination.

The presentation was made during a visit to the mayor by NationalBusiness Council (CONEP) president Rafael Blanco and vice president Rafael Paz,who said the fact that the country already has some centers must be taken intoaccount, such as the recently rebuilt Foreign Ministry, and those in somehotels.

Blanco stated the CONEP’s willingness to collaborate withissues such as traffic, trash collection, the relaunch of the seaside avenue ElMalecon and others. "We want to build a public-private alliance to help onissues that are common in the city of Santo Domingo."

Friendly

The business leader said Santo Domingo must be friendly topeople and the environment by eliminating the problems of the streets, the potholes, among other ills.

The CONEP leader noted that all large cities are committedto attracting business tourism, conventions and fairs.

"That’s a very important market segment, it moves manybillions of dollars a year, and has two great virtues," since in his viewthe people who come to those events almost always spend more than normaltourists and the other is that by getting to know the country they become apotential repeat visitor with their family.

"We need to create real exhibition facilities and aconvention center, despite that there are rooms for important meetings," Blancosaid.

Collado thanked Blanco and Paz for their support and pledgedto seek CONEP’s advice to create the Bureau together with the city council andother national sectors. "It’s an innovative project and we will join thatproposal."
