Dominican Rep. must promote medical, dental tourism

Press Release

Dental travel in the Dominican Republic is a subsector of health tourism that is in dynamic growth and expansion.

The Dominican Republic is a desirable tourist destination that has been consolidating and improving in the international rankings as a destination for medical tourism. In addition to its beach, mountain, golf, and gastronomy offer, its dental and wellness services have been scaling.

According to Dr. Alejandro Cambiaso, President of the Dominican Association of Health Tourism (ADTS) and member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Hotels and Tourism (ASONAHORES), as a nation we must promote the diversification of the tourism portfolio; especially medical and dental travel, since globally more than 11 million people travel each year for health purposes.

In the United States, according to data from the Medical Tourism Association (MTA), more than 120 million people do not have dental insurance and many Dominicans from the diaspora come to the country for the trust in their specialists and affordable prices.

Dr. Cambiaso states that dental travelers seek quality treatments related to dental implants, dental aesthetics, invisible orthodontics and technology such as 3D printing and painless procedures.

There are very attractive packages that include pick up at the airport and transportation to the hotel, dental consultation, detailed photo examination before and after the intervention, radiological examination, CT scan, and adding postoperative controls to ensure continuity of care.

What Will Differentiate Dental Travel in the Dominican Republic?

The expert in health tourism says that to continue strengthening dental travel in the Dominican Republic, we must work to generate alliances between medical and dental associations and between the governmental and private sectors.

In the same way, we must fight the intrusion and clandestine centers and continue to strengthen the promotion, quality, and safety of services and the entire dental, medical travel value chain.

“The Dominican Health Tourism Association encourages that all the professionals of the sector become members of their respective specialized societies and that the centers get authorized by the Ministry of Health and pursue international certifications and accreditations,” said Dr. Alejandro Cambiaso in a statement sent to DoHealthWell®.

Dr. Cambiaso, who has been leading the efforts to consolidate a medical travel industry in the Dominican Republic, also considers it important to encourage second dental opinions and create synergies with banking entities for treatment financing and professional liability insurance, international departments, multidisciplinary team, bilingual staff and expert guided advertising.

“The Second Dominican Republic Health and Wellness Tourism Guide is a key tool to instruct potential health tourists when choosing a certified doctor and a hospital.

Moreover, the upcoming 4th International Health and Wellness Tourism Congress will be a great opportunity to learn about the new trends in the sector and network with medical facilitators and companies dedicated to attracting international patients, as well as medical travel insurance companies with premium and international policies that offer coverage to dental procedures.
