Dominican Republic ranked 47th in global tourism cost report

The Dominican Republic ranks 47th in the world in terms of tourism costs, with an average daily travel expenditure of US$132, according to a March 2025 report by HelloSafe. This places the country in the mid-to-high range globally—more expensive than destinations like Mexico, Jamaica, and Panama, but more affordable than many neighboring Caribbean isslands.

The report evaluates daily tourist spending on lodging, food, and domestic transportation, excluding international airfare. In the Caribbean, Antigua and Barbuda tops the list with US$311 per day, followed by Barbados ($331) and St. Kitts and Nevis (US$272). By comparison, the Dominican Republic’s costs reflect a balance between luxury destinations such as Punta Cana and more budget-friendly areas like Jarabacoa and Pedernales.

Globally, the most expensive countries include Switzerland (US$251), the U.S. (US$249), and the UAE (US$221), while the cheapest are Laos (US$15), Kazakhstan (US$19), and Rwanda (US$21). The findings underscore how wage levels, infrastructure, and service standards influence travel costs and help shape tourism strategies.
