Environment demolishes all abandoned houses in Valle Nuevo

Santo Domingo.- The Environment Ministry on Monday announced a new stage in the recovery of Valle Nuevo National Park, for which all abandoned houses will be demolished.

It said the houses were formerly used to shelter Haitian day laborers and for other farming activities, especially on the slopes of “Las Espinas” and “La Nuez” in Ocoa, and the hillside of Pinalito, Bonao.

“In collaboration with the National Environmental Protection Service (Senpa), 21 houses that were located within the limits of the park were demolished.”

Environment added that the people who were farming within the protected area continue to voluntarily remove the pipes and irrigation systems which harmed the water sources and which can now reach the rivers in their normal course. “As part of the process, reforestation has begun in Valle Nuevo’s heavily degraded areas.”
