Haitians shoot Dominican Republic soldier as deportations rise

Elias Piña, Dominican Republic.- A Border Security (Cesfront) guard was shot in both legs when undocumented Haitians confronted several soldiers who tried to return them to their country.

Army soldier Alvarez Peralta assigned to Cesfront, was taken with non-life threatening shotgun wounds to a medical center with in western San Juan province.

The incident occurred Friday morning at Carrizal, Elías Piña province, when the soldiers tried to return dozens of illegal Haitians who were trying to enter Dominican territory.

Thousands of undocumented Haitians have been rounded up in recent days and returned to their country during sweeps carried out by the Army, Cesfront, Immigration and other law enforcement agencies.
