Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.- Punta Cana Group president Frank Rainieri on Thurs. said the country should refund the taxes to non-resident tourists who buy items for more than 100 dollars in Dominican Republic’s international ports and airports.

During ribbon cutting for Blue Mall Punta Cana at the Tourist Boulevard and Juanillo road, Rainieri suggested to president Danilo Medina to consider his proposal, to make the country a complementary tourism destination with purchases, because “it’s necessary to assume visionary and innovative risks today when shopping has become an important complement to travel.”

He said a survey at Punta Cana Airport found that 74% of visitors consider that there are no adequate conditions for purchases, which is reflected in their low consumption that barely average 103 dollars per passenger per stay, compared with an average as high as US$150 per day per person in other countries. “The tax refund is present in more than 40 countries around the world.”
