United States advises its citizens to leave Haiti

Santo Domingo, DR
The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, issued a statement today advising its citizens to prepare and leave that country after considering the situation generated by the growing fuel shortage and the progressive state of insecurity.

“Persistent insecurity and growing fuel shortages are obstructing the ability of U.S. citizens to find transportation to and from the embassy and the country’s airports,” the U.S. diplomatic legation states.

It also stresses that the difficulties arising from this oil derivatives situation, which has a global component, deprive Haitians of “the bare minimum.”

The embassy adds in its note that these problems “can limit access to essential services in an emergency, including access to banks, money transfers, emergency medical care, internet and telecommunications, and public and private transportation options.”
